Nearly all teen pregnancies are unplanned—that is, teens themselves say they did not intend to get pregnant. Resilient and determined, many young parents are able to create nurturing homes for their families, even if early parenthood is not exactly what they envisioned. Some say their families may have had a stronger start if they’d had the chance to pursue the future they want on their own terms, including opportunities to complete their education, save some money, and decide when to become pregnant.
However, too many young people – especially those who are economically disadvantaged or marginalized – lack education about human reproduction and sexuality and access to the most effective forms of contraception.
