Embedding Equity in Serving Youth Date: Sept. 28, 2022 Time: 10-11:15 am CST

Embedding Equity in serving youth

In a society that espouses the idiom “children should be seen and not heard” and maintains rules and beliefs that disempower youth, it is challenging to see how these beliefs are embedded in our institutions and systems and how that perpetuates inequity in the community. There is a dichotomy between not valuing our youth and holding them to impossible standards.  We do not provide the tools and information they need to move through the world and then punish them when they act in ways adults see as inappropriate.

Terms like client centered care, client being an expert in themselves, innate wisdom, only seem to apply to our work with adults (or how we conceptualize working with adults). In many of our fields, we have an ethical duty to do no harm. How do we ensure that duty is applied to the way we work with adolescent sexual and reproductive health and not solely to adults? How do we create programming or shift the lens in which we work with youth to empower them and serve them more equitably in all areas of their lives? How do we embed new policies and practices that ensure equitable services, access, and respects youth culture, identities, developmental needs, and sexual and reproductive health?

Objectives:

  • Understand Trauma-informed Care principals and how they apply at an organizational level
  • Assess organizational culture and strengths towards youth equity
  • Define youth equity and honor the self-determination, autonomy, and wisdom youth inherently possess with regards to their sexual and reproductive health
  • Establish path to having difficult conversations around power dynamics, social constructs, and social disparities as it applies to access to sexual health
  • Begin to design a trauma-informed organizational structure
